Using old blades in hobby knife?

I have been looking suitable blade holder to use used DE blades for cutting foam and thin plastics. I remember that my father had one for window scraping, but could not find it when I went home last time. Foam dulls normal hoby blades in few cuts and using DE blades again would be economic.

Any suggestions or pages to look for them? I am also considering making one when I have access to metal lathe again.

Maybe one of those straight razors that hold DE blades would work.

Are you sure that your father's scraper didn't use single edge blades?

There are, and have been for many years, quite a few knives and scrapers that use SE blades. The SE blade is stiffer and lends itself better to this type of use. The only thing that makes a DE blade stiff enough to do the job is the bow that the safety razor applies to it.

I can't say for sure that there isn't some kind of holder that uses DE blades for other uses but, I kind of doubt it. (I can't recall when, but my wife tells me that I've been wrong before!)

We got an aquarium scraper here that uses a DE blade. Mom thought I was picky when I put in a new blade instead of turning that rusted thing that had been sitting in it for years :D

Those scrapers are designed to hold SE type blades, which look exactly like the GEM blades used for GEM razors. I don't think that they will clamp down on a thinner DE blade.

What you want is to go to a hobby shop and find an X-Acto type knife. You want the larger size. They use replacable blades. You can then split a DE blade in half and stick it into the head of the knife. It should be able to clamp down on that.
