    Default DMT-8EE or Norton 4/8k

I've got a four sided pasted paddle and need something to establish a bevel on razors. Would the DMT-8EE or the Norton 4/8k be the better choice? Do they both produce the same results? If not, how do they differ. I know it would be cheaper and require less maintenance to go the route of the DMT-8EE, but would that single plate be enough for a self-sufficient straight set-up (along with the four sided pasted paddle and hanging strop I have)?

    Thanks, B&B.

I recently had that very same question answered here and the answer is the DMT 8EE is fine for both creating the initial bevel and for a nice 8k polish. A pasted strop of 1 or .5 micron would finish it off well. The reviews are that the DMT cuts faster than the Norton 4k side but finishes as smooth as the 8k side so for the money and not having to buy a lapping stone to flaten out the Norton the DMT seems to be the best bang for the buck from all who weighed in. Everyone said it was fine for initial bevel creation and several use the exact set up you're talking about. You won't be able to do heavy restoration work like big chips or really really bad edges but for regular honing of an ok edge the DMT sounds like a great option and it's the one I have waiting for me tomorrow when I get home :)

When I need to establish a bevel I use a 1K Japanese King Stone. I have also used automotive grade 1K sandpaper available at your local Wally World. I have never used a 4K to establish a bevel so I could not tell you if it can be done. Good luck.

Well, I got my DMT today and have been honing for about an hour. I can tell you that yes, you can establish a bevel so if you want to stay simple and cheap at first this stone works but obviously since I've been doing this for so long I already wish I had a 1k stone to do the initial fast cutting. But, like I said, the DMT 8EE will establish a bevel on an ok edge but don't expect it to take out chips or really, really dull edges. I have one teeny tiny chip in my blade (hard to see) and after an hour it's somewhat reduced but definitlely still there.

The DMT-8E (1,200 mesh) is better for establishing a bevel.
The 8EE (8,000 mesh) is for polishing the edge.

    Look at the chart.
