I know people have mentioned using balm after an alum block, often rinsing the alum off first, but I've not heard anyone mention using splash. It sounds sorta like they both do the same thing?

It depends on the shaver. If I have a lot, and I mean a considerable amount of razor burn, I use both.

No - I do use both, alum then splash or balm (or occasionally alum, splash, then balm)
Do rinse off the alum though
On many occasions, I use all three and burn has nothing to do with it.

That's good. At least I won't feel alone then... I recently saw some discussion referring to the Nuetrogena Triple protect lotion as 'balm', which I though lotion was different. There were a few times I did alum block, AS, ASB, and then triple protect lotion...

I use all 3 as well. Cold water rinse, Alum block, cold water rinse, After shave splash, and then After shave Balm.
It seems to work well...I thought thats how it was suppose to be done.
no.
I don't feel a noticeable coating or film from the alum.
The splash and balm are still just as effective as before.

As a side note: alum makes for a fantastic deodorant as well. In fact, that's exactly what it does: it de-odorizes.
