Default Old Gillette Case - how old???

I am really confused about this case. I can't find anything about it in the Krumholz book. I know Gillette switched to the diamond logo in 1908 it was pressed into the satin. I have never seen a leather case with the little diamond logo like what the pocket sets have. When did they make them like this?

I own a set with a case similar to this except the Gillette logo is in script not the diamond pattern. I believe I dated it circa 1906. A pic of the razor that goes with it would help date the case if you have it. My gut is telling me that the 1908 date isn't too far off the mark but I can't say for sure.

The date you spoke of is pretty darn close. It's hard to date some Gillette items as they often used up all stock before moving to a new style even in mid run....

The above two members seem correct- I would say 1906-1910. Definately old- and those blade boxes look real nice.

Yes, the script logo is mid 1906 to mid 1908. I don't have the razor for this case otherwise it would be incredibly easy with the serial number. I am 99% sure a single ring old type belongs in this box. The blade banks look circa 1905 and the blades wrappers don't have "Made in USA" above King's head so I think that means pre-1913(???).

It really stinks being at work right now. All my razors and collected data is at home. Maybe Jimmy (Slant Fan) will chim in. He's got more Single and Double rings than I do.

I do believe it is safe to say that this case belongs to a Single ring Old Type.

As a sidenote, did the blade banks stamped 'Gillette' like yours come before or after the ones stamped 'sharp & dull'?

My understanding is that they were around at the same time but came from different case manufactures. I have seen a trend with ribbon cases that "Gillette" blade banks went with NY Times Square cases and "Sharp/Dull" when with the others.

I'd put the case between after 1910 and before 1921. The pre-1910 cases I've seen actually have the logo printed on the satin/silk/whatever the later cases seem to use this print on a ribbon and stick it in there method.

I´ve seen this one today on ebay. OK, the bladeboxes are mixed, but maybe we can see the right razor for this case.

I thought that time period at first for the same reason you stated but this is the same trade mark used in the pocket editions which were introduced at the same time as the Diamond and Arrow logo (1908). I don't think anything in the teens had blade banks like these either. This type of trade mark might have been a transition thing between the Script logo and the Diamond and Arrow stamped in the satin.

    Default Old Gillette Case

I have an old case like that. The nametag is missing but you can see where it used to be. It appears to have been a tag in the shape like yours rather than the diagonal ribbon. I can't know if it was a diamond logo for sure but with the age of the razor, I would expect it to be.

The razor that came in the case is a 1913 old type. One of the blade banks is missing but the one that is there is like the one in your picture.

I have no way to verify that the case is original to the razor but I have no particular reason to suspect otherwise.

    Regards,
    Tom
