Default Another recruit joining the ranks...

Hey there everyone. I just wanted to introduce myself and say Thanks for all of the great information and support available here. I have not actually started wetshaving yet, but will be very shortly. I have always been fascinated by the concept, but also very intimidated. However, after reading through many, many posts here, I realize that as long as I am careful, and follow the great advice already given, I should be fine in no time.

I'm currently deciding which equipment to start with, although I'm leaning toward the Merkur HD, since that seems to be the most recommended razor for newbies! The C&E Best Badger also seems to be a no brainer. The only thing holding me up now is whether to start with creams or soaps. I imagine I should just get one of each to start, and go from there.

I do have one question about the creams and soaps that I have been unable to find an answer for. On average, how long do they last? I just want to know if I should order several at once to avoid running out, or if they last a month or two.

I'm real excited to get started. If not for this site, and all of the support given by eveyone here, I doubt I'd even be doing this, so thanks again.

    welcome to B&B!

to answer your question they last much longer than the caned stuff. a almond sized drop of cream will be enough for 3-4 passes with most creams. soaps last a little longer IMO. don't worry though soon enough you'll collect more than you'll ever use :)

A 6-7oz tub of cream will last about 6 months of daily use. A 3-4oz tube will last about 3 months. The typical cake of glycerin shave soap will last a month or so; "hard" soaps will last about 2 months. This is a fairly rough estimate as it depends on how much you actually apply to the brush, the hardness of your water, the the type of brush you're using. Of course, the shelf life of creams and soaps is much longer so you'll probably end up with enough to last years, like the rest of us.

    Keith,

I'm right there with ya. Just got my Merkur HD in the mail yesterday and I'm waiting for a sample of blades from LetterK. Tomorrow will be my first day with my new DE setup.

I started with some Nancy Boy cream, and I really like it. Going to order some Trumpers Violet and T&H Lavender as well though.

    Hope you have good luck.

Welcome, Keith! You'll enjoy your experience and probably find it far less intimidating than you expected. The Merkur HD is a very good choice and the guys are giving good advice in how long the soaps and creams last. Just pick one -- you'll have more than you can use in a very short time! (That's caused by a disease you catch when you start wet shaving!)

It's not that hard Keith. I mean, most men were shaving that way and getting good shaves so you'll be the same way in no time.

    Enjoy.

Just buy one of each cream and soap available on the market and you should be set for a while.

Wow, thanks everyone for the fast and helpful responses. It sounds to me that it doesn't really matter how long the soaps or creams last, because before I know it, I'll have a lifetime's worth.

I stopped in at my local C&E on my way home, and picked up the Best Badger, and some of the Sweet Almond Oil in a tube (they were sold out of their tubs). Now I've just got to place my order for the HD and some blades (I guess a best bet would be to start with the sampler) and I'm on my way. Thanks again everyone. I'm really looking forward to getting started, sharing my experiences, and pitching in as I gain some experience.

Well I placed my order for the Merkur HD, and the sampler from letterk. Both items are on their way, and then it's time to jump in. After reading all of the stories from both the experienced and new members, I'm really looking forward to starting. I feel like I'm missing out on something good.

A lifetime's worth of soap and shaving cream is just the start. I have enough to pass down to my son and grandsons....
