Just go slowly. Use low pressure and shallow angle. Have fun.
Never hurts to have one handy. 
Nice to have and they work, but I prefer the Pacific Shaving Nick Stick (https://www.google.com/search?q=pacific+shaving+nick+stick&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8). It's a liquid roll-on as opposed to the flaky solid stick (that winds up melting away before I use much of it). It also doesn't sting as much.
It will certainly stop any nicks and weepers. It's really for occasional use--heavy artillery. For regular use, I would recommend an alum block.
I still have most of the one I bought at Walgreens Drugstore back in the 60s.

I have one - it broke in half. So, i've been using up the top half, then I'll finish off the bottom. I rarely need it. Haven't used the alum block I bought yet - I need to make a good case for it first.

Good deal. Unless you have a hand like a jackhammer, it should last you just about forever.
They are handy to have around. Mine doesn't see much use, but when I need it, I'm glad I have it.
I've still got the styptic pencil I bough more than 2 years ago - it only gets used once in a blue moon, but it's had some heavy use in the past
On the other hand I've been finishing every shave with an Alum Block for over 2 years - not so much to stop weepers, but mainly to seal the microscopic nicks and harden the skin on my face - I wouldn't be without the Alum and my face always feels like a million dollars - but I also appreciate the Styptic on the rare occasions that I need it

You may not need it at all. Just go slow and watch your pressure and angle. Good luck!
