The "almond-sized" amount of shaving cream nobody ever says whether it's with or without the shell, and the difference could be 2, 3, or 4 times as much.

Depends on the cream. If it takes a dollop, use a dollop.
I use more. In reality cream is totally inexpensive and more=a better lather as a rule. Maybe the size of two filberts (in the shell).
Minimal experience and a tad of common sense will go a long way in determining an answer.
Schmear here. At least 2-3 almonds in a schmear....

This is an "Almond Situation" of great importance and needs attention. Are we talking about hard shell or soft shell almonds? Are they bitter, Chinese or green almonds? Are they natural or blanched? Any and all of these variables can have a serious effect on the amount of cream being used and the quality of the resulting lather. 
I use 1 almond size snurdle + 2 1/2 dabs and add a sprinkle of water. Works perfect every time.
