Do people use these techniques (J-hooking, blade buffing) with str8 razors, or are they strictly for safety razors? I am also curious about the names—are these standard terms in the wet-shaving world?

    Thanks,

Default Why don't you give them a try?

    NOT

You know, I have never ever used a straight before, but I have been a DE shaver for half of my shaving life, started DE moved to a Mach3, got angry with the prices and with the goop and went back to DE and soaps a few months ago.

While those techniques seem to make sense for a DE razor, I simply can't imagine someone doing them with a straight. I have the feeling just changing the angle of incidence with the straight will give you what we DE users would get with the advanced techniques.

I don't know if they are standard names, but Mantic does explain the origin of a couple of the names in his video.

Oh and if you do decide to try them with the straight, do send pictures later (assuming you survive the ordeal )

I use "blade buffing" on some problem areas when I use my str8 and it works very well. Just make sure to really stretch the skin out and take it slow. Give it a try and see how it works for you.

I haven't tried these with a str8 but I do use tha J-hook method when I am using my DE's which is more often than not. It helps under my chin and throat area.

I find myself doing the gillette slide all the time with my straights.. Its when you don't exactly go perpendicular to the edge but slighty slide in a direction to create a slicing movement.... Be very carefull if you intend to try this..

Yes! They are very strictly regimented around here. Use a term incorrectly and you could be banned.

The terms just make it easier for us to talk about them. Since Mark made some videos and used some of the terms they have become rather generic around here. I don't think anyone will have a cow if you use a term incorrectly, but it does make it easier to explain what you are talking about.

When I first started here I tried explaining a method that I like to use and it was awkward. Then I discovered by watching one of the Mantic59 videos that what I meant was called blade buffing. So now I just say blade buffing and don't explain it unless someone asks.
    Relax...Take it easy...Enjoy the lather.
