What is a knot?

Please, I'm new to this and when I read about brushes, people refer to a knot and the size of it.

What does that mean?

The knot is the hair part of the brush.

Expanding on that the size of the knot is taken at the base where it would be "glued" into the handle of the brush. "Glueing" is usually done with epoxy or silicone.
