BBQ, Shovel Relic at Goat Rock and Whale Pot

Had BBQ for lunch in Marin, then took HWY1 to Goat Rock Beach and found the apparently famous P&H Co. Model 206 steam shovel/excavator (1920s?) on the beach. Drove to Bodega Bay (No bird attacks!) and saw one of only two whaling pots in such good condition (2 big cracks). No whales dared to show up.

Yes, one must admire rust and age! The only time rust and age is a bad thing, is when you notice a rust bubble on your fender on your birthday!

I was wondering what an excavator was used for on that beach. I came across information regarding the same model excavator that was used for mining seashells. So maybe that's it.
