Welcome! Do most folks in Wales still speak Welsh? Reason I ask, one of my closest friends for many years was from the far north of Scotland and didn't learn English until he was in his teens. So, do the different components of the UK still maintain their cultural languages today?

Most people in Wales do not speak Welsh, it's around 22% I believe. When I was in school the language was in decline (and we would be chastised if heard speaking English), but I'm happy to say it has flourished since then and the number of Welsh schools has increased dramatically. It's more prevalent in certain parts, mainly the West and North, though it is growing in the South too. I think Welsh is far more widely spoken than Scottish or Irish Gaelic (but I could be wrong!).

My friend (sadly deceased) would be in his later 60's today.
