No need to fear the straight. I don't use one but they are just another sharp tool. 
I've been hesitant because I already sharpen chisels, planes, handsaws, mortise chisels, more handsaws etc. I leave table saw blades and band-saw blades to a friend who does that for a living. I'm just kind of sharpened out and love having the DEs to open and go!
