Tech with Embossed Gillette - Zamak?

I was reading the wiki here and in some threads that the cap on Techs with the embossed "Gillette" are zamak. Is that always true?

Just wanting to confirm. I've thought about trying a Tech. The cheaper ones do seem to have the embossment. :001_smile

I'm not anti-zamak, but want to know what I'm getting.

Thanks!

These are brass, the ones that came after these have the Zamak caps.

The zamack caped late model ones are fine shavers and can be had very cheaply, I'd recommend owning one... In fact I'm gonna use mine today

I've been seeing some techs that have the embossment but say they're from the 50s. From the wiki, it indicates that the embossment and zamak started after '62.

How is one to tell brass embossed caps from zamak embossed caps?

This is the later Zamak cap, the logo is pressed into the cap while the earlier ones is etched onto the cap

Oh, so the embossed diamond shaped one is still brass where the pressed one is zamak? If so, it's easy to tell the difference.

Thanks!

I used mine this morning for Tech Tuesdays. The handle was from a scratch and dent sale, and head from a travel set.
Now it has a mild manner, great weight in the handle, and a pleasure to use in rotation.
Life is good.
Fed it an Astra blade, some Arko soap, and Yardley vintage musk cologne...
Why that all strikes me as funny, I don't know. Maybe showing my age.

I've seen the wiki reference made more than once recently. It is incorrect. I have both a tech and travel tech from 1963 (both I-1) that are not Zamak. I believe (I may be wrong) that Zamac did not appear on the techs until 1964. The brass handles continued later into the decade until they were replace by aluminum. Below are three of my 1960's techs, demonstrating the changes made over the years. L to R: 1969 (O-4) with Zamak head and aluminum handle. 1966 (L-4) with Zamak head and brass handle. 1963 (I-1) with brass head and brass handle. It is difficult to see in the picture, but the diamond logo is etched on the 1963. I think all techs are great razors, even the Zamak ones. I would recommend any of the 1960's techs to someone wanting to try a vintage razor at a minimal investment.

Make sure it has the right baseplate with oblong slots. Sometimes they get mixed up and sold wrong.

The etched cap comes with the baseplate on the left. The one on the right is the prewar Tech baseplate.
