Recommend a custom strop maker

Hi everyone

I need a strop for a Wilkinson razor and a custom strop.

Can someone recommend me a custom strop maker?

Thanks

You could just buy a pice of leather and some hardware. They are very easy to make and you don't have to be skilled at all. Tandy leather has tons to chose from! They have everything you could need.

While I agree that hanging a strip of leather between two pieces of hardware is easy, there is much more to it. The first and most important step is in choosing a leather to use. Then the preparation of that leather is no small thing. Then proper cutting, getting the grain right, cutting it to reduce the chances of cupping, etc etc. The number of strops obtained from a hide is far smaller than you would think because of all the flaws in leathers. As simple as they look, I would submit that a true top quality strop requires a fair amount of craftsmanship. Now the world is full of less than top quality strops, but when you lay them next to one made by a real craftsman the difference is immediately apparent.

If you can, get the Wilkinson one it made out of kangaroo leather. It wont stretch out like other leathers made that thin.

Yeah I tried to search for one on eBay but no luck.

It's a pain taking the blade out of the razor and stropping it on my regular Illinois Co strop.

If I can find one of those blade stropper handles I might scrap the idea of a custom strop.

I found one on ebay but not sure if the Wilkinson wedge blades will fit.

Well I heard back from Tony and he said he couldn't do it on the count of the one type of strop he makes.

Any other recommendations?

Did you contact Torolf at Scrupleworks? I've got three of his strops, one of them custom. I've got too many strops, most of them high end strops, none of them Kanayama, but otherwise I'm covered. The Scrupleworks strops are definitely my best ones but not the most expensive.

I know this thread's a few weeks old but I finely got someone to make me a strop.
Alastair from Westholm razor strops made this for me. Can't wait to try it out.
