Default I shaved with a sixty year old razor

I shaved with a sixty year old 40s gold tech razor this morning. For me (yeah I know I'm weird) that was an experience I treasure. Gillette sure got it right. A 98 cent product that is still functional 60 years later and will probably be good for another 60 years.

Next up will be my 30s Oxford. I can't wait to get my 1920s Big Fellows threads repaired and shave with it. I have a nice 1904 double ring that I'll save for a very special day. A day when I have a lot of those small round bandages available.

I only hope my kids were listening when I told them not to toss out or garage sale my razors when I am gone.

If only they could talk! I love the sense of history and connection to the human enterprise that comes with using old things, too.

Keep on having fun, and keep on sharing it with us.

    Thanks

There's nothing like a vintage Gillette to get the job done.

I will receive a HD soon because I am curious as to what they hype is about, but I can't see it doing better than my 40's SS or any of my others for that matter, as far as shave quality. I am 100% gillette advocate!

I started with an HD, and I prefer my Gillettes to it. I tend to to get a little irritation on my chin with the HD. No such thing with my Super Adjustable, Gld Slim or eve my Red Tip SS. I have a gold tech coming in the mail, and my first open comb, so I'll have to test those out and see what they're about.

My 1948 Gillette Tech is the best half dollar I have ever spent. I love that thing.

BTW- the other half purchased a '56 Blue Tip.

Your 1904 double ring will give you a wonderful shave - does, at least, for me.

I use my Progress once in awhile to remind me how much I love my Gillettes!

It's like driving a vintage Corvette. Would you rather do that or cruise along in a new Porsche? Something to be said for each, which is why I have a Merkur HD as well. But there's something about a product that still works exactly as conceived 60 years later.

    Thumbs up

+1 for Gillette shavers that still work well after 60 years, plus.

I recently got my grandfathers Gillette Super Speed (I think it was made in the late 40s). I have used it several times. It still works great! It is really neat to have and continue to use a tool that Grandpa owned after more than 60 years. It was clearly well made.

    R James,

You wasted your money. The HD is a great little razor but in my opinion is not any better than any of my 15 vintage Gillettes except my two adjustables. Don't like either of them.

    Yup.

I like the vintage Gillettes, enjoy shaving with them, and generally prefer the TTO's from the late-40's to the late-60's. But I do have a single ring from 1909, that a century later provides a wonderful shave. (and the straight razor guys use razors much older than that.)

I tried out my new to me 1905 double ring this morning. 103 years old and it gave me my best, closest shave of the week. No cuts, no nicks, some razor burn. Hats off to Gillette for making such a fine product that it takes modern blades and gives great shaves more than one hundred years later.
