Beard care routine

Hi folks. I'm very interested in learning how you choose to care for your beards. Especially in what order you do things in. It might even be interesting for those who are new to sporting beards.

I'll go first, starting from when I get up in the morning:

  1. Shower, thus washing my beard with Oak beard wash
  2. Blow drying while using a plastic comb from Kent to straighten the hairs (I have a VERY curly beard)
  3. Then I rub in about 15 drops of oil from Captain Fawcett
  4. Then I use my boar brush to more evenly distribute the oil and try to some what shape the beard
  5. Then I apply some mustache wax, also from Captain Fawcett, to give my mustache a natural look and to keep the hairs out of my mouth

Oh, and I have about 4 months of growth. I haven't measured, but I guess my beard is about 2,5 inches long. I shape my chins and neck (below the adams apple) one a week. And please excuse my english, if anything is unclear please ask.

OK, I'll play...

My beard is about 5 months old and just over 4 inches long, and very dense...you cannot see any light through my beard...

Wash with warm water every morning and every night. 3 times per week I use an all-natural oatmeal based soap.

The following occurs both morning and evening:

After rinsing, I put about 20 drops of oil in my palm, rub my hands together until the oil is warmed slightly, and apply to the beard, making sure to get down to the skin for conditioning.

Brush with boar hair brush followed by combing through with wooden comb.

Apply balm as needed. Some days require balm, some days don't depends on the day and what the beard wants. Comb through with wooden comb after. This is only done in the morning. Never at night.

Heat the mustache wax tin with a low heat hair dryer to start softening it up, than apply a bit to each side of the stache.

Comb the wax through while heating with hair dryer on low, followed by the "cool blast" option on my hair dryer to "set" the stache in place.

**Mustache wax is also only done in the morning, never at night.**

That's it. The longer the beard gets, the less involved the process gets. Gravity and length will cure what ails you...

Well I'm new to sporting the full beard. Have had a circle beard since I could grow it. Funny thing is, I never did anything special with it, except for when I grew long one year to dress up as jack sparrow and I would use conditioner on it.

I'm on 9 weeks growing time.

Here's my routine:

Shower; I use a 'natural' brand oatmeal type bar soap that was given to me as a gift.
Dry it off with a towel, then add a dime sized amount of Dollar Beard Club Sandalwood oil.
Brush it downwards with a DBC boar brush and head to work.
Getting home, I try and wash it again with a facial soap I kept from the Paris casino in Vegas lol, or a Neutrogena facial 'foaming' soap that I have some samples of.

I've had a full beard of varying lengths for about 11 years. My beard is currently 9" long. I didn't use to do anything for beard care but three years ago I was introduced to beard oils and such.

My routine now looks like this:

1. Brush out with my favorite beard brush, the Wet Brush for Men.
2. Shower and wash with the Everyday Beard Soap by CanYouHandlebar.
3. Towel dry
4. Oil by applying beard oil liberally with hands or sometimes a brush. Current favorite beard oil is Wisdom Beard Oil by CanYouHandlebar

On days I don't shower I rinse my beard with warm water, towel dry, and then add oil.

I only shampoo mine about once or twice a week,as I don't want to strip it of it's essential oils 9or whatever...).

Most days I put on some oil as per BadDad's methodology, brush it and go.

When I do shampoo it, I follow up with a conditioner (whatever my wife has in the shower at the time...)

I'm about a month into my yeard after shaving off 5 months of growth.

1. Wash with a beard soap. Started with Blue beards, have found a couple of other natural bars I use now
2. Pat beard to remove some moisture, apply oil while it is still damp, I find the oil spreads better.
3. Brush with wooden beard comb, I do this before the boar hair brush, as I find I can work knots out easier.
4. Brush with boar hair brush. I find it gives me a better groomed look over finishing with a comb.

I do the same process if I use a balm for the day, just depends on how I feel in the morning, I find the balm gives more hold for longer.

Being Canadian, I have found some awesome oils, that the Americans on the site might benefit from with our poor $ right now. I use Mammoth Beard Co oils or Browns Beard Oils, they have a vanilla smoke scent that is amazing. A lot of time I use Vice Soap, a bear soap on my beard.

I can't understand how you guys dont blow dry your beards after a shower. Doesnt it take ages for it to become dry?

I could see myself skipping blow drying the beard in the summer, but in the norwegian winter my face would be freezing if I went outside while it was wet.

Question about "beard" soaps. Is there anything that makes them more specific to beards or are they the same thing as any natural soap and just branded as a beard soap? Today I bought a bar of sandlewood natural soap from an amish grocery store in a nearby town. They also had some grandpa's brand soap which I know is fairly popular for use on beards. So I figured they would serve the same purpose just the one I bought was made locally and far cheaper.

I use a natural oatmeal soap or just regular almond glycerin soap.

Some people like and use "beard wash" but Ive never seen a reason to...

Didn't mean to hijack the thread but figured it was a good place to ask that question seeing as how a lot of you mentioned using a beard soap or a natural bar. I am pretty new to bearding so I don't exactly have a routine but these are the things I have done, am doing, or plan on starting to do. I started "shaping" my beard by letting the chin grow first then the sideburns then connecting them and letting the cheeks and jaw grow out. I still shave my neck but think I'm about to abandon that as well. I've tried blow drying and straightening my beard with the wife's straightener before and didn't exactly like doing either, I felt it was doing more damage than good. I use my homemade beard oil twice a day, in the morning and evening after a shower. I use a regular plastic comb before and after oil application. I am looking into getting a boar brush or a wooden comb to replace the plastic one with. I recently got my first beard balm, heavy-duty by honest Amish, I plan on using this maybe once a day in the afternoon to stretch my purchase as much as possible as my new beard obsession has started to become pretty pricey. I got the natural soap that I mentioned in my previous post that I plan on using specifically for my beard 2-3 times a week.

Sounds like a good plan.

One recommendation, if I may be so bold...plastic combs are murderous on beards. They create static electricity which makes it nearly impossible to tame wild hairs, they have rough edges that cut and pull on the hairs causing damage and loss, and the plastic does not distribute the oils through the beard as well as a natural material like wood or boar bristles.

Pick up a cheap wooden comb and brush from Dollar Beard Club. I wouldn't use their oils or balms again if they were given to me for free, but their comb and boar brush are both quite good and very reasonably priced.

Chris , I can't recall the price , but on Lehman's I think I bought a natural Horn Comb for my Son-N-Law's Beard and a pocket beard and stache comb . I'll double check to make sure that was the site , but they were super reasonable , and said no static and easy on hair and whiskers , great for long beards and ladies with super long hair (Amish Type Store) . They looked Great and like they'd be Perfect , last forever , keepers . ... I checked the large multi-colored horn comb was there , and a smaller pocket version , but I didn't see the pocket Beard snd Stache Comb (It had a leather shealth) , but it was a perfect match , I may have gotten it from a Shaving Site (Probably a vender on here , TSS , I think) (Nope not TSS , but they have some Great Beard Combs) , it was from Classic Shaving , it was more expensive , but good and matched exactly .

Ive long admired some of thise natural horn beard combs. Once mine gets a little longer, I think Ill take the plunge..n

In the morning I brush my beard with a boar brush before showering. I will wash my beard with natural shampoo 3 days/week and just warm water on the other days. After showering I pat dry my beard (I keep mine fairly short for work) and after shaving my neck and cheeks I will brush it again and then apply homemade beard oil (jojoba / argan oil with an essential oil blend) and comb with a wooden comb.

In the evening I typically just apply more beard oil (usually a different scent than the morning) and comb it.

I've always had a beard or at the very least a moderate amount of facial hair (goatee and sideburns etc) but kept it fairly short at around 1/4 inch. I've currently been growing it out and its around the 3.5 month mark so any sort of maintenance is new to me.

My routine is:

2-3 times a week shampoo and conditioner
Towel dry
Blow dry it down while combing
Apply beard oil with palms and fingers
Comb the beard oil through with comb
Smooth and shape it with hands.

I am just waiting for some moustache wax to arrive and which I will apply at the end.

Been using balm before bed and am really enjoying the layed down, flat look I get in the morning that is created by sleeping on the beard

You will get better results if you shower and apply oil before brushing. The boar brush helps to distribute both natural and introduced oils from the root to the tip of the hair. Brushing prior to showering will distribute natural sebum oils that will be mostly rinsed away during your shower, especially if you wash the beard...

just a suggestion...
