public domain free historical art scans

New York Public Library has been scanning its huge historical art, print and photo collection; now its cataloged and available in 'public domain', translate free download.
great resource for photo backgrounds, slide shows fillers, derivative artwork, etc.

to be more correct, some of the collection is still in their 'art house' collection, which means low resolution downloads are free, but there is a cost for high res downloads.
nevertheless, there is a large volume of high res scans online at no cost to download.
