C.V.Heljestrand 924 F. - anyone with any history / details?

Just picked up this razor for 5€ on a whim...

A bit of Googling did not turn up much info. Most references to a model 924 are for a model 924 F. L. which apparently was a hospital issue model (F.L. = "För lasarett" = "For Hospital"). The all metal construction is presumably so that the razor is autoclavable.

But the one I found only has the F. after the model number and I'm wondering how it differs from the F.L. model.

Two possibilities come to mind: "fält" = field and I saw reference to a model 923 F. which was surmised to be military issue, so perhaps the "F." means it's a "field razor". Though ""förberedelse" = "preparation" and as it's already established this type of razor was used for surgical prep, maybe it's that simple. "F" is for "förberedelse", it's a "preparation razor".

It's not in the greatest of shape, but I was anyway looking for something to practice restoration and honing with.

Anyway, if anyone has any info to share about it's history, I'd appreciate learning what I can about it.

First of all; Welcome herrakona. You aren't by any chance Swedish are you? I'm asking since you obviously know Swedish. In any case I am.

I do understand your confusion. My answer is that there was no confusion at all at the time the razors where made, but that you have to consider the time dimension. The Heljestrand No.24 series was produced for many decades during which denomination, size (4/8 and 3/8), scales, number of different versions and toe changed several times.

You've done thorough research and I learned from reading it. Thank you. The mistake you do is to expect the denomination to be coherent over the whole timespan. The razor you have would over the years be denominated No.24, 924, 924F, 924FL, KIFA or KIFA Heljestrand No.24. I don't know which years the different denominations were used. I guess that the town archive in Eskilstuna might help you.

Over the years the No.24 for surgical use always had steel scales to, as you write, be cleaned in an autoclave, but the blade changed form since it was the same blade that was sold on the market. Later surgical versions though were special, they were shorter than the ordinary No.24.

The one you've got looks like an early version in fair condition. All it needs is a bit of cleaning. I guess that just using a micro fibre cloth and some Autosol or other metal polish would go a long way.

If you like you can find out more about the Heljestrand No.24 here:

I hope I was able to be of some help.

Thanks Polarbeard for the detailed info.

No, I'm not Swedish, nor do I speak Swedish, but I have a degree in linguistics and know where to find good lexicons :)

Cheers!
