Col. Conk Straight Razor Set

I have seen these pop up on B/S/T once in awhile and I was curious if they are worth their salt? I am more interested if they would get the job done, the razor seems nice (Rebranded Dovo) and I haven't heard bad things about the strop (not a Tony Miller) but there is very little information on the "paddle" hone that comes with the set, I am assuming it is crap, but would it get the blade sharp?

It retails for ~150 dollars, but I am sure there are better places to get them.

I was thinking of using it as a beginner intro into honing as I can see SRAD taking hold of me....must not visit another antique store....

Sure it will get the job done. I think you can do better buying a kit from someone either here or at SRP. The strop is probably a Dovo also or a jemco but its german made and good quality.

I got a question. You're all saying its better to buy the starter set from someone from the board. To be honest, in a few months I've been a member, I've seen only 1-2 sets to be sold. Or they are 200-300 dollars.

It's a decent set I think. The razor has flimsy feeling plastic scales but the blade is a quality dovo blade. The razor on it's own will cost you $90-110. The strop was identical to the $40 Dovo strop I got from classic and seems to be quality to me.

I don't know about the stone though, my gut feeling is that it's not worth using.

I would recommend however that you go with a used razor that's been honed up by a pro here. Also, folks seem to think that tony miller's strops are superior to dovos and at a cheaper price. I can't attest to that until mine arrives in the mail!

You can post a 'want to buy' request in the BST section and explain what you're looking for and someone will probably hook you up. Otherwise, there seems to be more for sale on the straightrazorplace site, not many more though.

I saw your 80dollar ad. And it's the second thing I'm eating myself about the most. The first one is my mom and bro throwing in the garbage my grandfathers straight a few months ago

I saw your ad as well, I really wanted to jump but missed it

. I was just curious, think I am just going to stick with my Bismarck, find a decent hone (my dad claims to have one), and I am still trying to get a Tony Miller starter strop, have some leads but have yet to find one for immediate sell.

if you are looking for a Tony Miller strop, besides his website, Vintageblades.com, shavingshop.com and straightrazordesigns.com all carry his products, he is trying to make more and ship less

I am looking for one of his starter/apprentice strops, I believe the websites listed don't carry them (other then his site). I am not ready to spend 70+ dollars on a heirloom strop when I might not even enjoy straight razor shaving. I was really hoping someone had already upgraded and I might be able to scoop up a used one. I guess just like my capshaw brush, good things come to those that wait.

I was lurking in the darkness.....waiting to strike. Mine mine mine. I think your right about the stone. Have not had much luck trying to hone anything. I tried it on a vintage straight i got from the 'Bay before trashing a new blade. Any idea on the grit of the stone in that set?
