FILTRATION MATERIALS
Cigarette filters are attached to the end of the cigarette rod. Filters are made in a variety of designs. In addition to papers and adhesives (both of which are discussed separately), most cigarette filters contain filtration materials known as a filter tow and a plasticizer. The filter tow is the bundle of cellulose acetate fibers or papers that comprise the bulk of a cigarette filter. A plasticizer is a softening agent that is added to the filter tow in small quantities to bind the filter fibers together. Some of our brands also contain carbon designed to assist in the filtration process.

A cigarette filter contains two papers. First, a plug wrap is used to contain the filtration materials (i.e., filter tow and plasticizer). Second, a tipping paper holds the filter to the cigarette rod. The tipping paper is wrapped around the filter assembly (i.e., filtration materials and plug wrap) and extends over the cigarette rod. Tipping paper is made from cellulose fiber and may have applied to it various colorants (e.g., pigments to give a cork appearance and/or to add a monogram) and coatings (e.g., to prevent the cigarette from sticking to the lips.

So skip the nasty stuff and there's some interesting ingredients in there. Vanilla bean. Dill. Celery. Cardamon. cinnamon. Rum. Etc.
 
Wow, Rob. That's quite a list. Reminds me of that old ice cream commercial, where the kid is reading the label trying to pronounce all the chemicals ("poly... poly...I dunno"). Keeping my ingredient list short and basic. Updates from this weekend:

1. The presses have been empty for some time, so I figured I would rectify that with as simple blend of 5100, spiced up with about 10% long cut perique. Dash of rum, and sealed her up.

2. "Casing Experiment #1" was kinda underwhelming, so for "Casing Experiment #2" I reduced the extract down a lot more, to get a more pronounced flavor, and added a bit more molasses. This made the mixture a lot thicker, and subsequently more difficult to work with on ribbon-cut tobacco. I have a feeling it might be about the right consistency for working with whole leaf, but I want to nail the flavor before I try anything like that. I jarred it up, and will probably try a bowl some time this week.
 
So, I pulled the latest batch out today:

It's about 90% McClelland 5100, so it has that unique McClelland smell to it. Jarred up the big cakes for aging and the little ones for sampling. I generally enjoy McClelland VAs, and the 5100 was the most enjoyable of the blending components that I tried out, so hopefully this one's a winner.

Specifically not in that order. For me, it was the opposite of that order. If you're flying, though, I suppose a flight might be more than the room - it's off-strip so the rooms are really quite reasonable.

If it smokes as good as it looks....wow! Impressive job.
 
that looks fantastic, all this talk about tobacco blending and pressing has me thinking in another direction, Navy Plug. Has anyone tried making their own plug?

So, if you're following the Black Sails thread, you'll know it has devolved into a plan to recreate Captain Packer's personal blend, which we've dubbed "Black Death". Time to break out the ol' press again...


First, since I'm making a much smaller batch (100g), I cut some liners for the inside of the walls:

Awesome, Price. It is cool to see your design as well as Erik's. I have seen Glen Quelch's (from GQ Tobacco)too and all are very similar.
 
Cleaning up the back room, I realized that I still have an awful lot of blending tobaccos left, so I decided to do a little experimenting. The latest concoction is based on something I read on tobaccoreviews, but it's red VA (5100), with sweet dark stoved VA and a good Oriental. A little out of my sweet spot, but I'm optimistic.

All mixed up and sitting in the press.
