Pinning ivory without washers

Hi people,
I have a pair of razors with ivory scales one blades is broken, I have a matching blade to replace the broke one, bit of advice, the original scales don't have washers on them, I've rescaled lots of razors but never one without the external washers, any advice? Wouldn't have a problem normally I would just try, but these are something special! and would want to mess up

All the old razors scaled in ivory that I have seen didn't have outer washers. Was this just custom or is there a reason behind it?

I've seen this debated several times but no conclusions were ever made.
