Yaupon Tea

NPR's "The Salt" covered yaupon tea, brewed from the yaupon trees grown in North America, considered one of the only plants in North America to contain caffeine (besides the coffee plants grown in Santa Barbara, CA and as ornamentals across the country).

Common names of trees and shrubs are a little weird. That said, the only yaupon I know about has the scientific name Ilex vomitoria. We were told that folk medicine types used it to induce vomiting, hence the name. Good luck with that.

The article covered that, it was misnamed, probably because it was used ceremonially by Native Americans in a ritual that included vomiting, but the plant itself doesn't induce vomiting.

Caffeine and antioxidants, the perfect beverage. I'll have to try some.

Huh, how about that.

Got my order of Yaupon tee. It is OK, not a strong tea. color is light brown when brewed. Has a slight after taste. It hard to put a description of the after taste, it is not unpleasant. I don't know at this time if I would reorder or not.
