What's new

Please recommend something Scratchy!

For now I have a Simpson Duke 3 and a WSP in pure coming. I hope I find what I'm looking for in one of these :)

How do you like the new brushes?

For me, Simpson's Duke 2 in Best has about the perfect balance in terms of backbone, scritch and softness in the tips. I also am liking my newer Simpson's 57- also in best for similar reasons. From your description, pure may be a god choice if you want to stay with badger.

I think pure badger, set low, would be darn scratchy, with stiff backbone
Failing which you can try:

Same thing I thought reading the thread title.

I bought a Rooney 3/1 in pure. Never thought the pain would ever ease up. It took forever to break in and comfortably work a lather with that brush. Just buying badger in pure doesn't guarantee scratchy though. I bought Col Conk in pure from Atlanta Barber Supply that rivaled most any other brush in luxurious comfort.

Get a brown (36/65 mane/tail) Vie-Long horsehair. As far as I can tell, they start scratchy and stay that way; unlike boars which start scratchy but then soften after several uses.

+1. I have a Vie-Long Natural Brown horse hair brush that is rapidly becoming my "go to" brush. IMHO it has just the right level of skritchy-ness to provide a really nice exfoliating lathering experience.

I'm looking closely at the Vie-Long brush... any recommendations on model? I like BIG FAT knots.

For truly scratchy (feels abrasive even when wet), try a Simpson Eagle in Pure.

I mu never looked at the eagle, I'm not sure about the Knot, I like fat knots or at least above 23mm... Is it as dense as say, a duke? The Duke 3 in pure is about the same amount cash...

Via long, brown horse hair ordered! Along with a few omegas.

The Pure brushes don't tend to be as densely packed as those in Best, and the Eagle 3 tops out right around 23 mm.

Look at Whipped Dog Black Pure Badger. Stiffer bristles than Silvertip, good backbone, and the price is right.

Why do you want a scratchy brush?

The Plisson synthetic is the bang opposite of that and I don't think I can go back to any scratchy.

Lol thanks fellas. I got a ton of good recommendations. I ended up with a Duke 3, an omega 49, a vie long epsilon, and I'm taxed... Between my artisan brushes, and these new ones, I think I'm good. I haven't used the Duke, but it looks stout and I think it's what I've been looking for. All my other brushes have long lofts, the Duke seems to have a mid size knot with a short loft, making for a good combo. At least I hope so, if not, there's $115 down the drain.

I would have to think the Duke 3 in Pure will be right up your alley. Curious to hear how you like it.

Do you have a really thick beard?

I'm torn.. I got the Duke 3, but it seems kind of small, I'm tempted to buy a chubby 2 and send this back, but I haven't used it, it could be awesome... Anyone that has both care to chime in? I mean, I already have a 30mm Knot XL Large brush... so would the chubby 2 just be redundant?

I'll post Pictures tonight for some brush porn..

What kind of 30mm brush do you have? The main cachet of the Simpson Chubby line is the extreme density of the brush and relatively low loft. Ideal for face lathering, if you like really dense brushes.
