Help Finding Honemeister in Minnesota

Hi,

I recently received my great-grandfather's straight razor and wanted to learn to shave with it. However, it seems a bit dull (I tried the hanging hair test, and my thumb nail), not that I'm an expert. So, I am in need of someone to sharpen it for me ( I don't want to have to shell out 80$ for a hone, and the time to learn myself right now). Does anyone know where I could get it honed in the Minneapolis or surrounding area? Also, I would prefer not to have to mail it anywhere, because I figure it will cost more.

Welcome to B&B!! That sounds like a pretty nifty razor you have there, with a lot of family history.

Hey Randy:

Well, I have shaved twice with it, and I'm not sure if it is the razor or the technique (or lack of it) but it pulls quite a bit. The second one was better than the first, so that leads me to believe that it is something I am doing. I have tried varying the angle with regard to my face, as well as the angle of the blade with regard to the floor (heel first, straight on, or toe first). Unfortunately I just can't seem to get it.

I have noticed that it cuts better for the first half of the shave than the second, should I then go back to the strop halfway through?

Is there any way to tell if I have rolled the edge?

Oh, and I would love to take a look at the razors you found. I'm not sure when the next time will be that we will be over in St. Paul though. Maybe I can convince my wife to let me go over there sometime this next week.

Hello Zac,

In all honesty, given the shape of the edge on that razor, I would retire your Great Grandfathers razor to a position of respect.

One of the razors I picked up is a Simmons Barbers Pet 421, 5/8, in excellent condition. You are welcome to try it out, just send me your address via email and I will ship it to you for a trial period.

One of the problems with honing a razor while the customer waits is that I do not get to shave test the razor.
I really do have to go back to insisting on shave testing each blade before it leaves my hands.
