I am new to honing and here is my main question. Should the entire blade be on the hone or is it ok of some hands off the hone. I feel like the shoulder is dragging. This seems to be causing excess metal to accumulate right on the edge of the hone
The entire blade does not have to be on the stone at once, just be sure you work the entire edge equally. Make sure the edges of the stone are chamfered or rolled to protect the edge as it passes by. If the shoulder is dragging try using a heel forward stroke.
Are you honing a gold dollar, by chance?
The spine must stay on the stone. The toe or heel can lift and roll, but never lift the spine. Heavy heels are tough for beginners to diagnose and remedy but can be done. Taping the toe as Buca showed can help.
Ues pix please. Taking a WAG, try cleaning the hone so swarf is readily seen, then hone using strokes with the razor, say 45 degrees or steeper to the hone.
