first attempt

just acquired a timor and cavalier straight razor and had my first attempt at shaving.
wasn't overly pleasant, couple of nicks and it felt like it was tugging at the hairs to much, ended up finishing my shave with a conventional razor.
what i would like to know:
1: are these brands any good, are they worthwhile using, will they hold a edge.
2: shaving tips, how to hold the razor properly, do you shave with or against the grain.
3: correct honing and sharpening techniques as i assume my razor isn't sharp enough and a sharp razor is the key to proper and enjoyable shaving.

Send your razor to Bayamontate or Doc226 for proper honing. It will be a game changer for you. What are you using for a strop?

The new Timors are a pita to hone and most don't hold an edge, I have no information on the cavalier.
