Default Advice on next shaving move...

    Hello,

I decided to switch to a DE Razor a few weeks ago... I went and bought myself a weida 9306C which I've been using for a few weeks now and I watched a few of mantic 59 videos on YouTube.

I like to shave just before I shower, as I find the hot water smoothes my skin afterwards as it fills irritable from the shave. So I boil some water up, add a bit of cold water and then splash it on my face and use a face cloth as well to hydrate the hair/skin.

I'm still not finding that it shaves 'close' enough... so I'm wonder if I should consider a more 'aggressive' razor (I like the idea of an 'old school' razor of eBay)? Or maybe some different blades (I'm using the ones that came with the razor)?

Also, I'm currently using shaving cream from a 'can'.

Any advice or tips would be really good.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to B&B!!

First, ditch the canned goo!! Get some quality cream or soap and a Brush.

Also, it does take a while to get the technique down, and you may consider doing some reading here on pre-shave prep, it makes a world of difference.

Also, blades are everything!!! I don't know what blades came with your razor, but please try a sample pack from westcoastshaving.com. Start with a derby or crystal.
Work on your blade angle, pressure, etc. It takes a little time, but well worth it!!!

Others will offer similar advice. Please don't give up, just take the time to get the products that will greatly improve your shave!!

Good idea on those sample blade packs...it will probable take a while to go through all those blades though.

I'll also get ride of the can...

So weishi is an okay shaver? Not worth buying something else?

    Thanks.

Get rid of the canned foam. Canned foam does not moisten and lubricate the skin and was only invented as a fast solution for those who don't care about their shaves. Never in my life will I use that stuff again.

I honestly know little to none on your razor. I prefer Gillettes of all vintage. IMO the very best newbie razor is a Gillette TECH. Very gentle and used with a quality blade will provide great shaves. A vintage Gillette SS is also a fine razor, but I would try the TECH. They can be had for just a few dollars or less.

Don't go crazy with the blades. Try a derby or crystal and stick with it for a few weeks. Changing too many variables when starting out can result in less then good shaves. Get your technique down and then experiment.

    I also find it works better if I apply pressure...but I guessing I shouldn't?

No Pressure! You will find yourself with razorburn and weepers. Let the blade to the work!!

The worst thing to do is to use pressure. DO NOT use pressure, take your time and use short gentle strokes.

    mcollins,
I have a Weishi that I use as my travel razor. I find it to be a great little razor, very mild shaving. Blade selection is the key to the Weishi IMHO. Do yourself a favor and get a blade sampler pack. Find the right (most comfortable/ closest) blade for YOU.
The goal is to make multiple passes with little to no pressure reducing the beard with each successive pass. You will be used to jamming the old type of razors you were using against your skin to acheive a close shave. Old habits die hard, but your results will be much better with no pressure.
As to shave creams, we are not wackos! You really will get a more comfortable and close shave with a quality shave soap or cream and a brush and mug. You really will.
    Good luck sir!
