Default Anybody Shaving For Less Than 16 cents/Day?

Some of you know that I have quit purchasing new creams and soaps until I have used up a fair amount of the supplies I bought when I had a brief problem with acquisition disorders. I have been using up my least favorite creams working up to my favorites.

For the last 51 days I have been using up a bottle of "Lucky Tiger" that I was able to purchase for $8.50. I don't recall how much it cost to ship to me, but on the high side let's say it cost me $11.50 delivered. I am about half way through the bottle, and I bet I get a good 90 shaves out of it. 11.5 divided by 90 yields about 12.8 cents per day for this cream. I put in a new DE blade about every 5 days on average. So, let's say about 22 cents per week on Crystal blades delivered -- about 3 cents per day.

Using the foregoing numbers, my shave costs me about 16 cents per day. Anybody shaving for less than that? Some of you soap users can probably beat that number by a long shot.

When I first started, I was shaving very much on the cheap. 97 cent Williams Mug Soap whipped up with a dollar vintage boar brush in a vintage coffee mug borrowed from the kitchen cabinet... Whiskers sliced with Wal Mart Personnas (prior to getting the letterk sampler) and a 2 dollar Gillette Fat Boy found at an antique store. I got GREAT shaves compared to what I was previously doing so as you say it can be done.

Unfortunately, I have not stuck with that set up. SOMEDAY (maybe soon) I will attempt a month of shaving on the cheap again. Might be fun!

My initial purchase of 1 brush ($40), 1 Merkur HD barberpole ($40), Taylor Lavender ($15), and using Crystal blades which are 12 cents per piece and last me for 4 days, I can spread out the initial cost of purchasing my supplies and get about 30 cents per day over the first year. I can deal with that.

Hopefully I dont get too addicted and will keep my supplies minimal. After all, I started wetshaving to save some money as well as for a great shave. But I remember the poll that clearly showed most people dont save much by wetshaving...

I'm under 16 cents a day. I've been using Thayer's After Shave-- same people that do the which hazel stuff. My blade has been Murkur, which sucks. But when I use the Walgreens blades I get 7 days of shaving out of them. My cream has been La Toja from Spain. It came really cheap. So I think I'm good to go.

vergulde hand saop @ 1,50, lasts 20 shaves already made a slight dent in it, can make 100 with it i geus. derby blades for 8 cent, worth about 3-4 shaves. That makes 3,5 cent. Eurocents. so that would be $0,05. Good thing i splurged on that 2 euro palmolive cream.

edit: Disclaimer: this is witout water and or heating costs, also optional ASB not included.

I'm not actually doing it because I'm still in the experimenting phase... but one of the combos I actually quite liked was the Derby lemon shave cream ($3.50 at Lee's) with 100 Derby blades for $17 delivered off ebay. I get 3-4 shaves out of a Derby but could stretch it to 5.

Combined with any old Gillette off eBay and a cheap brush and that's a really good shave for not a lot of money.

For my computations I have averaged my soaps to be about $4.00 a puck. My blades 10 cents a blade. My Island made alcohol based AS $3.00 a bottle.

    Blade: .02
    Soap: .06
    AS: .05
    BBS shave: Priceless

I'm very stingy with spending on blades and soaps/creams. My RAD is my weakness. Once I thin the herd down to the essential razors, I'll be back in line with my frugal ways.

    100 Derby Blades - $20.00 delivered
    35 other assorted blades - $0.00

    LifeShaver (2@$1.00 ea.) - $2.00
    Derby cream - free w/ 100 blades
VDH puck - $.50 drugstore clearance (my last one left out of 5 purchased)
Tabac - $18.00 shipped (BIG splurge for me)
    Bigelow Proraso (B&BW sale - 3 @ $5.00 ea.) - $15.00
    ARKO sticks (3) - $10.50

I didn't include an aftershave in my calculations (or the brush I use, or the razor, or the mug). For the pure shave considering only the cost of perishable items (soap, cream and blade), you may have the least expensive shave going. 8 cents a day is going to be a hard number to beat.

A 99 cent bar of Mug once lasted me almost a year. Granted , I didn't chave everyday.

Now-a-days, I wet shave strictly to save money. I make my own shaving cream (I have complete control over lather and smell), I make my own aftershave, and I sharpen my DE blades to at least double their life-span.

In all, with 25 razors and a few dollars worth of raw materials, I'm set for the year. Besides, It's much more fun to make your own high quality products than to order them through the mail.

Excluding RAD, SBAD, and SAD my costs are way down. I probably paid $1 to $1.50 for my Gillette slim when it was new. I had an expensive badger from Hoffritz that I used for about 20 years. I've used a puck of Cade for about 18 months and I can get 5 to 7 shaves from a Derby. On the other side of the coin, since December there is a 37G, 39C, two Hoffritz Slants, a Hoffritz travel and a BK4 to catch the more expensive items.

I thought that stainless steel, platinum coated blades couldn't be sharpened effectively... are you using carbon blades or something? What do you use to sharpen them?

Kudos to you on the homemade stuff--- I make my own soap and sometimes use my own homemade aftershave too. I haven't tried making cream yet--- is it really cost effective?

    Hmmmm, by some rough calculations:

Blades: IP's - $20 per 100. Each blade lasts for three shaves = $0.07 per shave
    Soap: Trumper refill puck - $18. Lasts 6 months = 180 shaves = $0.10 per shave
    Aftershave: Aqua Velva $4.00 bottle - Lasts about 3 months = 90 shaves = $0.04 per shave

Darn, that's a whopping $21 cents per shave!

If I estimate the Trumper puck to last 9 months it does drop down to $0.07 per shave getting me down to a total of $0.18.

I could stretch out the blades but I always swap em out after three shaves. I do use some high-dollar aftershaves and balms in addition to AV so that blows the pricing model too.

Still cheaper than cartridges! Imagine using all the fancy high-dollar soaps/creams/aftershaves AND cartridges? Ouch!

My blades (Gilette Bleue extra, Derby, or Wilkinson) cost about 2-2.25USD (in fact 1.5€)/10; generally one week.
Soap, "french "monsavon" or palmolive cream, 2.50USD. Don't know how long it last!
Aftershave, between 4 and 20USD, depending of which one I use.

Alum block last realy a long time, so the cost pro shave is little.
What about water, and to warm it! ;)

The problem is the razor. The brush. The second razor. And oh, this after-shave seems to be a good one! I would really try another brush, how does a *** brand feel? And the stand. The mug. And....

I would not mind spending 50 scent for a good shave. I've heard of people charging 50dl.

I can't stop laughing at this post. I have yet to figure out exactly WHO has managed to save any money with our new hobby. Hahahahaha.

I have a new quote for wetshaving:

Save a penny here, lose a dollar there.

If you use it, just make sure to quote me. Thanks :)
