Good cheap Safety Razor for Wet-shaving beginner?

I'm totally new to the whole wet-shaving thing, but I want to switch because using a cartridge razor gives me terrible razor burn and bumps. Looking around amazon for a double-edged safety razor, I came across these three:

http://www.amazon.com/Weishi-Double...ef=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1208718412&sr=1-5

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Edge-...ef=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1208718412&sr=1-6

http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Handle...ef=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1208718412&sr=1-3

I've heard that Merkur is a good brand, but cost is a big factor for me. Would any of those three razors suffice, or would you recommend a different one in the sub-$30 price range? thanks for your help!

Any of those would suffice, probably, but you might be better served by asking about a vintage Gillette in the B/S/T section of the forum. You can probably get any of several later models for $10 to $30 there.

while you are at it feel free to enter into my PIF (if you are in the US) which should be enough to get you started well.

Welcome!

Please review the TECH. IMHO it is the ultimate newbie razor. Very easy to use!!!! Try a derby blade. The tech will give you a great shave without the burn. After a few weeks, pop a feather in the tech. This is one fine razor. Also read the reviews on the tech. You wont be dissapointed. Techs can be found for just a few bucks. I got a beautiful one for $ .99! on ebay!!

Personally, I like and use the Merkur Classic, both the Long and Short handled versions. I also recommend the Merkur HD for beginners.

For a first razor, especially if you are budget conscious, I would recommend a Merkur. They are the best makers of new razors and the models Art has just suggested are very cost friendly. You'll buy it once and can pass it on to your grandchildren.

I love the old Gillettes but if you go that route you may want to buy more than one, which increases your cost. Why would you buy more than one? Interest in variety and experiementation (called RAD). Also if you buy a used one you may then decide you want something more pristine if your used razor has wear or other imperfections.

Good luck and happy hunting!

If not a Merkur than may i suggest a vintage Gillette Superspeed off a good internet auction site or antique store. They are nicely built and simple.

Read my new post TECH Talk. Also read the reviews on the TECH. It is a gentle razor and will provide you with a great first experience. TECHS are often overlooked. They can be found online for a few dollars or less. You won't be dissapointed!!!! Plese trust me on this. As long as you use a light touch, I have found it almost impossible to get burn or nicks from the TECH. Don't be put off by the fact they are vintage razors. I have found many in pristine or NIB. Just my opinion. I may be a minority in this view, but please read the reviews posted on this site. It may change your mind.
