Cap for Creed bottle

I recently purchased a bottle of Creed Bois de Portugal on ebay and the cap wasn't the original one-it wasn't a Creed cap and it fit a little loosely. (this was indicated online so it wasn't a surprise to me). Fortunately I was just finishing off a bottle of Creed Santal so I figured I'd just sub this cap when I throw out the bottle.
However after 24 hours of soaking with soap (dish detergent) and water the smell of the Santal is still in the cap. Anybody ever try this? Will the scent go away? Anything else you can recommend? Is the cap necessary for the cologne to stay fresh or is it ornamental?

Maybe soak it in rubbing alcohol? Scrubbing Bubbles?

Let it sit out on the windowsill to air out in the sun?

It's pretty much ornamental when it comes to a spray top.

Decoration. If I'm visualizing what you describe, I doubt the scent would contaminate anything, especially if you've been soaking it.

Once that CREED gets into something it doesn't come out!
I have a T-shirt that still smells like Aventus even though it's been washed a bunch of times.
