Avery Mephistopheles Beer

Wow, 17% ABV!?

The dark side can be quite appealing, and in the case of Mephistopheles from Avery Brewing, it can be quite tasty as well. The final installment of The Demons of Ale series could easily be categorized as sinful — with it's black as midnight appearance and rich, complex flavor profile. The annual release kicks down the door at 17.1% ABV this year, making it perfect to set aside and let mellow for years. Or you can open it fresh and enjoy one of the most diverse desert beers around.

had it back in january:

my notes from that day were :

it's a very high alcoholic beer (at 16% ABV) smells great, roasted malts, toffee, caramel with a small hint of vanilla, you get a little bit of brown sugar in there as well.

I try to take notes on every craft beer i have tried.

Yet another beer I can't enjoy due to the ridiculous laws in Ohio. Is beer a valid reason to pick up and move to another state?

I've had that one and The Beast, another of their super high ABV beers. Both were good, or at least much better than I expected with that alcohol level. I think it was The Beast that was pretty hot on the palate, and had trouble hiding the etoh well. The other did much better than I thought and definitely had more substance.

Cliff notes: Interesting beers, worth a try just for the novelty alone, better than you'd think they'd be.
