At what point do you start using mustache wax?

My mustache is a little over a month strong. I can grab it with my finger tips and pull.
But it doesn't seem quite long enough to style in any way.

I'm thinking of putting some wax in it. I've never in my life used wax. But I'm not sure what the point would be right now since it doesn't feel long enough to do anything with.

I rub beard oil in it daily and comb it but that's it.

At what point would you put wax in your mustache?

I tried to take a photo, but dang it just looked to weird....just my mustache

I think if you're at the point if asking then you're there. I had that same question with my beard. I just tried it and liked it .

I usually start putting some sort of product in it at about 3 weeks give or take a few days.

Everyone's hair is different in how fast and full it comes in or what type of hair it is.

My mustache hair is pretty stiff and will tend to have a mind of its own so as soon as I have enough hair to hold product and it starts feeling a bit unruly in the morning that's when I start.

I need to start training my hair to go in the direction I want pretty early if my handlebar is going to look right. I usually start of with either one of the mustache pomade wax in a tube or a water based hair spiking glue.

I really like using the hair glue because it stays clear and has crazy strong hold. I tend to use the Got2B Glued product line because I've had good results with it in the past. I use the spiking glue not the ultra glue styling gel. I recently starting trying their new spiking wax and find it very similar to waxes like Clubman but smoother and not as sticky as the glue before it dries but not as strong either.

In a couple more weeks once the ends/tips of my mustache start coming in decently I will start using some of my solid waxes. I may use them now if I'm going out somewhere because they hold well and smell good but for work days I stick with the glue.

I find sawdust tends to stick to the wax and not the glue which in my line of work can look kinda odd hah.

Todd I am about 5 months in and I find that the G2bG is still the best for the tips. I use a base wax and then style it and then finish it with the G2bG and , Jason I started uUsing was at about your point to keep it in place.

I have some pretty strong hair gel, not G2BG, but Garnier something something Spike. It holds my hair (flat top) perfectly.
I might try that.

I pretty much just like the shinny well kempt look. Without my beard oil it looks dull, but add the beard oil and the mustache shines!

For several of us, the point at which to start with the wax is as soon as it starts to look unruly, or growing over the lip, or getting in the way due to length.... or, just as soon as you feel like using some.

Oh, that wasn't a YMMV... that was merely some guidelines, with a final "If you want to use it, why wait, just put some in and rock out the day!" sort of comment.

This is the time where I really wish local stores sold men's grooming supplies.
I might run up to CVS or Walgreens but I highly doubt I will find any mustache wax anywhere around here.

Well, in my area both of them carry Clubman mustache wax. It would have enough hold for your length and style for sure. I cant see it holding up well for like the epic handlebar, but general hold and maintenance it worked ok till I manged to order a few other things to try out.

I just browsed the websites and I remember seeing it there.
I think I'll give it a go!
Thanks Dustin!

Happy to help. It's also a very inexpensive option. At least, it was here. I think I had a fiver on me, walked out with the Clubman, and enough change for a double cheeseburger, small drink, and a small fries for lunch. lol

It's always a good day when you can get mustache wax and a meal to go.

This was shot the Beard & Mustache Championship of the Universe last weekend in Atlantic City. The fellows and lady seated in the background were the judges.

Here's a link to the facebook page from the contest:

I did not win my category. My wax (a combo of several waxes) failed me. The winner was very deserving. The woman seen in my photo above on the judges stand is a supposed famous porn star. So, I can now say that I appeared on stage with a porn star. This doesn't impress me, but I guess it qualifies as the kind of thing one can use to start a conversation in a bar. Good thing that I don't spend much time in bars.

From the styled beard category, to show what one can do with loads of wax:

This photo above is from the official FB page of the contest.

Why I didn't win my category? See below for the three winners:

Sorry to hijack this thread. I promise it won't happen again.

Anyway, the proceeds from the contest went to a worth charity that provides medicine to the needy.

PS, the best selection of moustache waxes that I have been able to find on the web is at:

http://www.thestache.com/

which is a division of Royal Shave.

Ed. Pinaud's Clubman is not at all a bad place to start. It's cheap and readily available. When the label starts peeling of the tube, it does get annoying. If you don't close the top tightly, the wax will dry out and plug up the opening of the tube. The wax comes out of the tube in a nice soft, pliable state that makes it easy to work with; then it does harden once applied. I used it exclusively for 30 years until I discovered the innumerable and growing number of new choices, both classics and newcomers.

A guy I met after the contest shared a secret that surprised me, but that is apparently common knowledge amongst the cognoscenti: Elmers glue stick.

Where's the pic of your stache?
If I grew my beard for a year I could totally take at least 3rd place.

Jason, if you like the Clubman and look to try others, I'd highly recommend the Dub's mustache wax (not the cream). It's light to medium hold, looks and feels natural in the 'stache, but works well. It's a little cheaper to get from www.pomade.com vs thestache.com site. If you want a bit more hold, the Mr. King's Marvellous Moustache wax works great for me as well. I actually use a mix of the two between the body and the tips of mine.
