Brushes for using a shaving stick ?

Looking to buy a brush for daily use with a shaving stick (Palmolive or Tabac). Can be badger / boar / synthetic. I love a little scrub onto the face, I also need a strong brush as I use my brush very intens with (turning and paint strokes). I also prefer a mid -sized or large brush.

Money is not an issue - but most of all I am looking into a really good brush for this type of lathering.

I have a write up about my stick brushes here: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/359040-Stick-brushes-shootout

Hope this helps choosing!

Thx for the very usefull info, I also noticed that you have a lot of experience with shaving brushes - an expert. I have a couple of questions:

- Is their any difference between the basic strength of pure/best and silvertip badger - I tend to be very rough with my brushes and require something strong.
- For using a soap stick I always rub the brush against the shaving stick - what type would you recommend for this type of use. For badger I was thinking about a Duke 3 or Shavemac in pure / best, your Muhle synthetic seems nice as well.

In addition I am going to purchase 2 brushes - one badger and one boar or synthetic.

I am not aware of any differences in build strength between pure and silvertip. My Shavemac in the pic is a 'finest' - a mix of pure and silvertip.

For your usage I would recommend a Mühle synthetic (double duty for travel) and a custom Shavemac in finest. Be sure to set the loft on the Shavemac to 1:2 (23/46 mm for example) and it will have a great backbone for your type of usage.

You might also consider a Vie-Long horse custom set to 24/48 mm size, if the Shavemac seems steep in price.

Please be aware that the quality of the Simpsons knots in best is unpredictable.

Two-band badger or a shorter loft boar would be my suggestions.

In my opinion, a Plisson synthetic at $30 is the best value brush currently available

A good brush but for face lathering a tool with a little more backbone sounds like what the OP is looking to get.

Any experience with the Shavemac pure badger ?

No. I don't stand any scritch at all so I have chosen not to get one of those.

OTOH as soon as Rudy Vey ships the 2 band silvertip Holiday 2014 brush I will have one each of the others... They are my golden standard badgers:

2 band D01, 3 band D01,silvertip and finest Shavemacs

Nice collection, very nice collection - the blue 3 band D01 with a fan seems WOW

I just ordered the Muhle 23mm synthetic online

For the badger I am still in doubt:
Shavemac custom 24/48 in pure/finest ( I don`t mind the scrubby feel) or a D01 3 band 24mm, quit expensive
Duke 3 in best ( I think this is more dense/backbone than a shavemac in pure/best, the D01 will be denser and a chubby even more/too dense)

IMHO a Chubby2 in best is noticeably less dense than a 3 band D01 Shavemac. The 3 band D01 is my densest brush, by far.

If you like a little scritch it's hard to beat a horse hair. I love using my little Vie-Long 13052 and the Speick shave stick.

Good luck on your search.
