What's new

custom- start to almost finshed

Here a few pics and info of the razor making progress.
This one started off with Suminagashi White Steel.
A section is cut off and it's heated and hammered roughly to shape.

From there it's taken to the grinder for some more shaping, knocking off some rough edges and drilling pivot hole.
The shape here will be 80-90% of the final shape.

Once I'm happy with the shape the steel gets normalized then hardened.
Here is a pic of the razor after heat treating

From here the hard work starts..haha. Up until heat treating, there is lot of correcting that can be done.
Once you start the final grind it limits the amount of "changes" you can make to the razor. At this point take your time, work slow and stead, going to quick is a sure way to trash the razor at this point.

When the final grind is done and I'm happy with everything I put my mark on the blade. After that it's time for the final polish or etching (depends in the steel your working with).

Then you scales it, hones it and give it a test shave
At the of the day (or most of the time night for me) you try to remember to clean up and turn out the lights :001_smile

Wow. Cool post. I look forward to seeing more. You guys that can make a razor from a blank piece of steel are simply amazing to me.

Didn't know if you guys were interested in seeing the final piece, but here it is. This was my first 'commissioned' custom and I couldn't be more pleased. Thank you again, Brian.
