As my honing skills improve, I find that I really enjoy it. The concentration and repetitive nature are rather relaxing, almost meditative. Weird or what?

Actually, people say the same thing about making curry from scratch. The pounding and scraping is very therapeutic. Not just that, but the smell... Ooohkay, I know, I'm way off-topic now.

I don't have many zenlike feelings at this point, but I do see where you are coming from. I have only been able to produce a handful of good shaving edges to this point, a lot of which could easily be attributed to my "training" blades being inexpensive or very used blades. However, the process is becoming more and more enjoyable as I get better.

I don't make nearly as many obvious mistakes as I once did, and I can seem to feel where the blade is a bit better now. The melody of an extra hollow along the 12k is relaxing like a fountain.

Nope. I haven't been honing much lately since I've just been shaving instead of acquiring, and I find myself getting fidgety on occasion. So whenever I start getting antsy I pull out a chipped razor and work on fixing it with one of my translucent arkansas stones. It's not real productive, but it solves the problem at hand.

I get where you are coming from. Unfortunately, that Zen feeling dissipates after about an hour of honing, for me. Then I just get frustrated.

Definately not weird at all. The funny thing is that most DE guys that don't want to try a straight make their decision to avoid them because of all the "work that goes into maintaining them". As you are finding out, that aspect of the hobby is at least half the fun imo.

Absolutely, it is not work at all, but a pleasure to take a dull hunk of steel and transform it to a buttery smooth shaver.

I'm totally with you on that one. When I've got my cleaver, mortar & pestle, big wooden chopping board, and counter full of spices and vegetables in front of me it's like meditation. It's a zen kitchen thing that, happily, no one else in my family gets.
