Inexpensive hobby

Wet shaving for about two-three weeks thus far. Have three shaving soaps/creams thus far, and only ten more on my wish list. Can't wait to start putting more razors, blades, brushes, balms, etc. on my list. Thank goodness this is such an inexpensive hobby.

"Inexpensive" is a term used very loosely here. Either way, we hope you enjoy your time here and please feel free to ask questions! There as some folks that have been doing this a long time and have a lot of information to share.

Good luck and be safe!

My wife tolerates my shaving expenditures because it has forced my other hobbies to not be quite as expensive lately.

Let me introduce you to:
Golf
Blu-Rays (I must own them all!!!!)
Numismatics

 Wait till all the AD's hit you, then say that again!!

I've somehow managed to amass a 14 year supply of razor blades. My justification to Mrs Guzzler is that buying in bulk will save money in the long run. She doesn't know about my stash of razors, brushes & creams :blushing:

DE shaving can be cheap if you want it to be, but for most of us, it ends up costing more than carts due to all the soaps, creams, aftershaves, razors, bowls, etc. that we buy.

Yeah, I told my wife that all my razors together didn't cost what one of my carbon fiber guitar cases did. Epic Fail......she wanted to know just how much those cases cost, anyway.

If you buy mid-priced stuff, which is all the quality you need, you can get a lot of it for about $2-3/day (broken down, first year). Avoiding three fancy coffees/week can save this, or two desserts/week, shopping at the used book store, etc.

I agree it's cheap compared to most money eaters. (e.g. records, audiophilia, fine shoes, tailored clothing, cars, book collecting, fountain pens, etc.) I justify it as methadone to get off the really addictive stuff.

There are soooooooo many products I want to try, I cannot even decide what to buy. There are so many great soaps I want to own, different aftershaves and this hobby also got me into fragnances.

It really depends if you want to keep it cheap you can force your self to use only a couple products, but that is something we all really can't do. When I visit shaving webshops and order something, it's like watching porn and getting an orgasm of a minute.

The great this about this is that it can be as expensive or as inexpensive as we choose - even with recent AD acquisitions, it's still working out cheaper than had I continued pursuing the carts & goo route. There's a nice 'luxury margin' to be had!

Cheap???? Well I suppose to a certain extent that is true because i just got off severe AD of bespoke suits and MTO shoes and prior to that was cigars. But now i'm into customising vintage Gillette, let's see how this goes before i can comment any further.

If you look at it as a hobby, it really is inexpensive. Even an expensive soap ranges $40-$70, and the most expensive razors and brushes are all under $500, not counting custom jobs. Guitars (my other hobby) can easily go up to $2,000-$5,000. And then there are amplifiers, pedals, speaker cabinets, microphones, P.A. systems, etc. Oil painting on canvas is probably a comparable hobby in terms of cost. One can spend a lot of money on canvases and special paints, but most can do it quite cheaply.

However, most of us find that the immense world of scents, soaps, blades, brushes and razors is far too tempting to not delve into, and I for one spend far more than I ever did on shaving with a cart and can. But my last trip to Guitar Center was still more expensive than my entire three months of wet shaving, in which I have accumulated more shaving stuff than I could use in at least three years, so I have to agree with the OP.

Regardless of your definition of expensive....my current bids on eBay qualify as expensive. I think I'm going to check out the gentlemen restraint thread for November.
