I'm glad this has been posted as I've been wanting to buy a pair since I found out about them a few months ago. Pricewise, Allen Edmonds IS high end on my budget (I'm more of a Florsheim guy when it comes to this) so buying a pair is not something I wanted to do lightly. All things considered in this post, I don't think I will be disappointed in those oxblood wingtip oxfords I've got my eye on.
I find that with reasonable care, I get about 20 years out of a pair of AE shoes if they are my primary shoe - read worn 4-5 days per week. Obviously, you have to resole and re heel along the way, but I think that is reasonable service and a great value. I would not mind trying a pair of Alden, but they don't make shoes in my size, AE offer a wide variety of styles in the larger sizes.
I am am on my second pair of AE Sanfords in black - my primary shoe. I purchased them a year or so ago and don't see any degradation in quality from the pair I bought in the early 1990s.
