Potentially strange question about cruises

The best cruise that I have ever been on was the Mississippi Riverboat cruise. We were on the Mississippi Queen paddlewheeler. I probably would not go on a ocean going ship, but would do a river cruise again.

Thank you, everybody, for your input. It's good to know I can just crash on the boat instead of walking around. There are a few ports of call that I'd be fine skipping if possible. I'd love to do a cruise to nowhere just to relax on the ocean, but they seem few and far between leaving out of Florida (which seems strange).

I cruise out of florida, going again later this month, you can stay on board but things are shut down, casino, some bars ,shopps etc, pm me if you want to talk about it, can mention some things to think about.

My strange question: Do you have to leave the boat at the different ports of call? I honestly have no real desire to adventure around most of the places the boat docks, I just want to get away on a boat for a few days and be catered to in some fashion.

My wife's idea of a vacation is to pack as much as humanly possible into every waking moment. I'd love to stay on board and have the whole ship to myself.

One reason to go on a cruise : your bathroom

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will make you appreciate what you have at home more than this!

On the plus side, if you drink so much that you pass out in the shower, you can't fall down.

If you feel sad when your cruise is over and you return hime, here's a handy tip to make you feel as if you're still on vacation- put all of your furniture in a closet and move in.

I did a 4-day cruise several years ago with Carnival, Tampa to Cozumel and back. Just the one port. Don't know if they still do that route - I only look at longer itineraries these days.

Leaving from Florida you will get a lot of the Bahamas trips which are excellent. I like them a lot better that the cruises I've taken from the west coast.

If you want to stay on the boat that's great but it's cool to get off the boat and see some of the ports even to just take a short walk to stretch your legs, grab a drink and look around. Even if it's just for a half hour.

You are responsible to get back so we don't usually go any farther than we can walk in a short amount of time and get back with plenty of time to spare. I'm definitely not interested in taking a cab to the other side of the island. You are generally quite safe at and around the ports. This is a huge part of the islands economy, the vendors are very glad you are there and the areas you are getting off the boat in are quite nice.

I will do the boat excursions as they will hold the boat if need be to get you back on it in time. If you do your own thing then it's cheaper, but you are on your own and taking on the risk of the boat leaving without you if something were to happen. Snorkeling is excellent in the Bahamas if that's something that you're up for. I'm not a great swimmer and have no problem with it at all because it's so much easier to float in salt water. If you don't want to get in the water then there are also glass bottom boats that will take you sight seeing and load you up with rum punch. We did a tour of the Bacardi factory and a rain forest one time that was cool as well. The Bacardi tour finished with some frozen drinks that were great.

I believe jewelry and watches are much less expensive there. It's been many years but I bought a really nice Tag watch in St. Thomas I believe for about half of what it was selling for in the states.

Alcohol is dirt cheap there are well and really easy to pick up right on the boat dock in San Juan. Since you're driving and won't have to lug it around airports it may be worth the effort to pick some up if it's something you partake in. Most of the stores will ship whatever you buy right to the boat, do note that you won't get the alcohol you buy until the cruise is over so there will be no picking up a bottle of something special to enjoy in your room.

Also, you can buy Cuban cigars there, but can't bring them back to the states, so only buy what you will enjoy on the cruise if you're a cigar guy.
