Next up for a SA job is Jhd2000, he sent me this SA for a total makeover. The plan for now is to replate the brass parts in bright nickel. This razor has some issues, it is very stiff upon opening and closing and the adjustment doesn't work that well. The brass parts are all stripped and bare and the aluminum parts are rough looking. Here are the before photos:
It was just a little crooked due to some axial play. probably what's throwing your eyes off on the screen. Is it an optical illusion or is the handle really bent slightly?
I'd say! This is very interesting though, I didn't know that they made one of these in 1958...the date code is D4...is this right? The safety bar plate looks like a first designNow, that is some serious gunk.
The not so dirty razors you've been handling lately must have made your life a little dull, so this will add the flavor back.
The black plastic blade adjustment plate and knurling design make this razor from 1983....the date code is D4...is this right? The safety bar plate looks like a first design
I'm confused....So the D4 is it's own dating scale for these SA's?The black plastic blade adjustment plate and knurling design make this razor from 1983.
Nice work Cap'n! I'm seriously considering sending you my birth-qtr SA.
Aye, that makes sense...thanks!LOL no, they ran out of letters after Z so they started over.
You have helped out more than you know, Reverend. Thank you! Can't wait to see this one get done. I was glad I could donate this Razor so other Razor may live.
Herm,Cap. Is it possible to remove the black from the handle? I've got one where the metal is fine, but the black looks like it's wearing off. Thought maybe I could just have a clean aluminum handle sort of like a fat boy or slim.
Yeah, they are pretty thin. Every SA that I have worked on so far has shown the common internal pitting corrosion where the TTO attaches. Having one bead blasted and redone or polished or whatever seems like a lot of work to justify the cost. Interesting though, the handles from the black handled superspeeds seem like the same part. I haven't measured them to see if they are the same but if they are, I suppose one could use the handle from a SS to install on a SA.I know that anodized coating can be removed from aluminum by bead blasting because I've done it but I think these handles may be to thin to stand up to it. You would most likley need to find a less aggresive material than silica sand and I don't know if that would do it. I was under the impression that these handles had some kind of rubberized coating.
