Gillette Super Adjustable Disassembly

Next up for a SA job is Jhd2000, he sent me this SA for a total makeover. The plan for now is to replate the brass parts in bright nickel. This razor has some issues, it is very stiff upon opening and closing and the adjustment doesn't work that well. The brass parts are all stripped and bare and the aluminum parts are rough looking. Here are the before photos:

Is it an optical illusion or is the handle really bent slightly?

Looks like the X-1 did on the inside...

Now, that is some serious gunk.

The not so dirty razors you've been handling lately must have made your life a little dull, so this will add the flavor back.

I'd say! This is very interesting though, I didn't know that they made one of these in 1958...the date code is D4...is this right? The safety bar plate looks like a first design:blink:

Well, I got the parts to this one cleaned up and there are certainly some issues. The handle piece has holes in it and the end where the TTO knob connects is so badly corroded that it simply will not function when reassembled. The brass parts look like they have been cleaned with a dremel tool in the past or something like that, the plastic base plate is well, plastic so it really doesn't fit my skillset. I think I am going to take the leftover parts from the BB Deltaboy sent me to get JHD up an running. The parts will be replated by Chris Evatt. Stay tuned, gentlemen:biggrin:

We managed to salvage this one too, gentlemen! Using some of the parts off DeltaBoy's generous parts SA, I polished the exterior and reassembled this SA. It works just like it should and even has a nice quarter turn. It's a little faint on setting one but other than that, it's ready to cut some whiskers. As you gents can see, the base metal is in rough condition, as a result of some previous tinkering but they serve their purpose well.

Cap. Is it possible to remove the black from the handle? I've got one where the metal is fine, but the black looks like it's wearing off. Thought maybe I could just have a clean aluminum handle sort of like a fat boy or slim.

Herm,

Aren't these handles anodized aluminum? I suppose that it could be removed although I've never done it. I would have to refer to @nocutsnonicksnoweepers (Chris Evatt) on this one as my basic understanding of anodized aluminum is that it is an electrolytic process, something he is WELL versed in:biggrin: Not sure how long a clean aluminum handle would last without being protected in some way...then again, Gillette made a bunch of razors with aluminum parts that were not anodized, right?

I know that anodized coating can be removed from aluminum by bead blasting because I've done it but I think these handles may be to thin to stand up to it. You would most likley need to find a less aggresive material than silica sand and I don't know if that would do it. I was under the impression that these handles had some kind of rubberized coating.

Yeah, they are pretty thin. Every SA that I have worked on so far has shown the common internal pitting corrosion where the TTO attaches. Having one bead blasted and redone or polished or whatever seems like a lot of work to justify the cost. Interesting though, the handles from the black handled superspeeds seem like the same part. I haven't measured them to see if they are the same but if they are, I suppose one could use the handle from a SS to install on a SA.

I don't know about the rubberized coating...that would be excellent for grip though!

As far as the rubberized coating I really don't know and I haven't used my SA in a long time but that's what I remember it feeling like to me.

Mabey not so much rubber as plastic.
