Just confirmed that we'll be getting a kitten come October.
So everyone knows, I'm allergic to pretty much everything living on earth (even penicillin); this includes cats. SHMBO grew up with cats and pretty much from when I started dating her, I've been trying to find a hypo-allergenic cat to appease that hole in her life. In my research I came across the Siberian cat breed.
These cats produce less of the protein (Fel D-1) that triggers most people's cat allergies. When the cats lick themselves the saliva coats the hair, dries, and then is so tiny it floats around in the air for months. Because they produce less of the protein, there is less of the dander floating around. If you have severe late trigger antibodies (IgE) these cat's likely won't work for you. Fortunately we live close enough that we were able to visit and take a class at the breeder's place. I was there for four-five hours, petting the cats and breathing the air in a Breeder's House, I did not sneeze once, my eyes were clear, and at the end of the day all I got was a single small red bump on my arm, which I think is from a nail scratching me slightly.
Anyways, I just wanted to spread awareness of the breed for any potential allergic cat people out there and also to show off this goofball. Picking him up in October (good thing I'm not on a cat sabbatical). Should get to be about 20-25 pounds and have the disposition of a dog.
