I am about to start new project. I am looking for wood similar to cocobolo, but not cocobolo (I got 2 razors with cocobolo scales, so it is more than enough) . I found something interesting at ebay called Madagascar Rosewood (Vintage, Antique Straight Cut Razor Restoration - Madagascar Rosewood for Scales | eBay ). Has anyone got experience with this type of wood. It is possible to achieve high polish without lacquering?

If it's rosewood it should be fine...
look at bocote or bubinga either is a similar cocobolo sub. the rosewood is a little less dense. waterfall bubinga is a very tough and beautiful wood a lot of swirly burly figure.

What about gloss? Is it possible to achieve nice and permanent gloss just by polishing?
that my friend is why I use a ca finish on mine. as far as permanent only death and taxes are eventually the finish whether polish or whatever fail.
