What's new

Lets make some honing videos.

Not a lot of new honing videos coming up lately, so I challenge you all to make a vid and post the link in this thread. It can be anything from synths to arkies, cotis, jnats...anything. Full progressions or just bevel setting or finishing.
If you're new to honing and have a special request please ask..I'm sure someone can oblige you.
Also, any tips or pointers on shooting a video are welcomed. I've been trying for a while now and still can't seem to get it quite right so I think that would be helpful.

I'd like to see a video from one of our Arkie specialist, (mark, alum, papa) or anyone else in to arks. And I'd love to see Gammas SB in action.

Also, I know a couple guys that are having trouble now, so maybe you could post some clips of your current routine and get some tips to get you over the hump.

Any takers?

I thought it would be cool. And it doesn't have to be anything fancy. If you don't have a camcorder shoot a clip on your phone and post it. I think gamma clearly has the upper hand on videos at this point so maybe he'll drop in some pointers on light, angle etc.

I am glad to see you.

I am new to honing and my efforts to put a good edge on my Rolls Razor blades have been frustrating.

I have a Norton combination 4,000 - 8,000 and an Arkansas Translucent 13,000.

After going through the usual steps on the above stones should I go to the Rolls hone and then the strop or directly to the strop or even more directly from the 13,000 to my face?
Or should there be yet another step(s) that I am missing?

I have also used only the Rolls hone and strop without great success.

I don't have any experience with honing rolls. Seems like going from a Norton 8k to a trans might be a bit of a jump though. But I'd definitely strop before going to face regardless of what stone I finished on. Maybe someone with rolls experience will chime in.

I have no upper hand on video making.. trust me. If you saw my 'set up' you'd die laughing.
My lights are the 5500k bulbs hanging over my bench, they're scrimmed with black mat board and mounted to a 1x6 on L brackets superclamped to autopoles. It could not be more hodge-podge.

However - I really do want to stop shooting all cramped up on my workbench, and I am getting a new camera and I will need to test the video portions of it's feature set extensively - so there's that.

Maybe my GF can shoot the next one - different angles might be cool. Lights though - my gig is stills and I use strobes.
Continuous lights are not my thing at all - although, the GF tested a Fiilex LED Kit last week. I can get them back for a few days if I want.

Just hone normally ... Until you get HHT then lay a strop on a table and slowly strop it also charging the rolls hone side with red paste helps

Maybe one day for me. I don't have the equipment at present (just a laptop and a 35 mm digital camera) and I will be leaving for three months in September.

I don't know how I would set up my phone to film myself in my shop without help.

Maybe i'll bring up the idea of a video while at Alex's this week. 2 people honing in 1 video could be fun/new.

Sounds great. I am thinking about it myself. May start with a GD on a 600 chosera for bevel. I have a tablet so thats my plan.

I just use a large clip and clip it to my tripod... Then just adjust the tripod head until the framing is right

One suggestion, as a newbie who just bought a JNat 2 weeks ago, to all you expert honers - Can we please have some videos without the music soundtrack?

Before you all throw food at me (!) ....

I think it's really helpful to hear the sound of the razor on the stones. It gives some indication of how hard you are torquing the blade. How hard to torgue the blade at each step of a progression has been one of the most difficult things to try and learn. Hearing the glide might help too.

OK - you can boo and throw food now:)
