    Default Alum block+Witch Hazel+Splash+Balm (Anyone?)

    Hello,

I'm curious, does someone use the following four-combo product?:
    Alum block+Witch Hazel+Splash+Balm

If so, in what order do you use each product?

I just have the feeling that Alum and WH both do the same and that Splash and Balm, also do the same thing. Is this true? Or is it worth using this the whole combination?

It is probably overkill with the alum and witch hazel. Having said that, I do all of what you listed in the order you listed them.

Witch hazel+alum block+balm and no splash.

Works extremely well-I rarely(if ever) use a splash on my face.

I don't like to load aftershave too much.

Try using a bunch of combos in diffrent ways and see what works for you.

    Some folks are just WH
    Some folks are just Alum
Some folks are WH and Alum
Some folks are Alum the WH
Some folks are Splash and Balm
Some folks are Balm then Spalsh

    etc. etc.

I use just a 4 step process, but replace the splash with moisturizer. It's stinking dry here.

    alum>witch hazel>balm>moisturizer

The closest I get to that combination is when I use Speick with an ASB.

    Default my routine

    warm water rinse
    cold water rinse
    thayers witchhazel
    ASB

I had a problem when I first started DE shaving with a red face - I started to eliminate some steps and simplify in order to pin it down - I had thought it might be the alum block, so I stopped. Since then I have more or less determined it was poor technique + aggressive razor (47 aristorcrat) + Feather blade. When I took the Feather and the alum out of the equation the redness went away. I have been toying with the idea of giving the alum a try again....

I used to follow the exact same combo but lately I haven't been using the the Alum block. The more products the better!

I currently have been using the following as an "after shave"

    Warm water rinse
Alum crystal (leave on for 10-15 min)
    Warm water rinse
Thayer's Supermedicated (let soak in for 5-10 min)
    Musgo Real Balsam

I like this combo but I am still evaluating the efficacy of the witch hazel, I LOVE the smell of the Thayer's Supermedicated. The musgo real balsam works so well I often use that alone with great results.

    Alum Block
    Witch Hazel w/EO blend
    Balm, conditioner, or moisturizer

This combo does it all for me. I have a few splashes but I rarely use them.

I use an alum block... followed by a splash wich contains Witch Hazel extract... and if I feel my skin need extra protection or moisture I follow with a light balm. So... that is sort of like the combo you prescribed.

Splash. Why overcomplicate things? If your face is horrendously sore after shaving, piling on products is kind of like closing the door after the horse has bolted.

I have been playing with that combination to see what I like, I had not considered using the WH before the Alum though, may have to give it a go and see.
