Beers of Yesterday

When I was a youngster growing up in the NYC area there were many local breweries. From 1969 until 2000 I traveled to all 50 states and many countries in my business career.

Recently, I was at a bar having a beer when another fellow about my age sat down and ordered a beer. We began to talk about the "good old days" when there were many different breweries and beer did not taste the same. We began to go over local beers that were around back then most of which don't exist now. Some of those mentioned werea:

  • Ballantine
  • Rheingold
  • Piels
  • Blatz
  • Schaeffer
  • Lone Star (is this one still around?)
  • Cinci
  • Duquense
  • Hamms
  • Point Beer (from Stevens Point - may still be around).
  • Carlings
  • Falstaff
  • Naragansett (Is this still around?)
  • Bohack (for one grocery chain in the NYC area)
  • Rocky Mountain
  • Strohs Fire Brew beer (Pabst bought the out.)
  • Yankee Beer from Dubuque Iowa (the smallest brewery I ever saw.)
  • Schmidt's
  • Esslinger
  • Kruegger
  • Frommer
  • Grain Belt
  • Menominee
  • Atlantic
  • Reading
  • Ortleibs
  • Black Label
  • Iron City
Care to add to the list?

Naragansett and Lone Star are still around...

How about Shiner Bock which has made a comeback of late...?

Rolling Rock is still around and a classic

Genesee Cream Ale?

Schlitz? how could you forget Schlitz?

I am sure my Dad could come up with a bunch more, I will have to poll him..

Fox de Luxe
Hauenstien
Lowenbrau
Special Export (Green Death)
Plain generic beer in a yellow can that was simply printed "beer" on the side in lower case.

A buddy brought back some Naragansett from a trip to Massachusetts. It was better than I remembered. For a cold "after mowing the lawn" beer you could do lots worse.

Hamms and Grain Belt are still around.
Grain Belt is now called Grain Belt Premium and has a formula called Nordeast which is my go to swilling beer. About the best of the "american" style beers I've ever had.

Hamms is still being made by Millercoors and I can still get it on tap at most bars in St. Paul here. It's usually $2-3 dollars a glass and it's still very drinkable, usually the beer I have when I have to be a sober cab or when I'm not wanting to get too buzzed on the more modern beers. It's really good with a burger and fries on a hot afternoon at my favorite dive bar.
