What's new

Making a blade shinier that has intact etching (filly epbd)

So the age old question, save the etching or sand the blade... I do a combo of both to save as much etching as possible

So this is the blade rust stripes on front and back and lots of pivot wear (I covered cleaning this in another post)

thought those rust stripes would go away after a lite polishing... Well they didn't...

So first step is mask off the etching with electrical tape, really sticky and won't budge too easily

Actually forgot to take a pic of the masking so I did this post cleanup:

Rub the masking to ensure a good bond

Then follow gamma's thread "you don't have to be a pro" being careful around the edges of the tape....

Pay attention in the thread when he talks about blade polishing with Emory and white compound

My then flip back to my pivot clean up thread and do the final polish on a mini buffer... The soft cotton wheel won't peel up the electrical tape but check periodically to be sure

Did the same thing with this taurino today there was light pitting near the spine on the middle and toe of the blade face... You can't really see it in the pics, but now they are gone

Nice work, Heeso, and thanks for the tutorial. I could have used this technique to save the gold wash on my King Shaver. Ah well, there will be others.
I gotta find me one of them there fillys!

I've used nail varnish to protect etching with great results - just paint on a bunch of layers and wait for them to fully harden, then you can use buffing compounds without worrying about the etching. After you're done just use nail polish remover to clean it off. You can get pretty accurate with what you want to mask off for saving :001_smile

It works well except on razor that have a mixture of paint and gold wash.... The nail polish remover will take the paint with it
