fram, just a couple suggestions, perhaps spend more time prepping the chin and neck. I use a bar of glycerin face soap and smear it heavily over the stubble, then massage and lather it well, rinse partly, and proceed from there to lather with shave soap. even if I bowl lather, I will also spend extra time face lathering with the shave soap. Also, hydrate your shave lather more, with a spoonful or so of hot water into the brush, from time to time as you lather and as you shave.
Thanks for the tip. In my years of shaving I haven't tried glycerin as prep. For today's shave I took a shower as prep but it didn't seem to change anything. I normally don't use any prep other than face lathering and get excellent tug free shaves out of my SEs- on the chin too. The exception being while using carbon steel blades. Now, I've heard that carbon steel can be polarizing but I'm not sure about getting a stainless steel straight because I imagine the coating that makes stainless blades so smooth will not be there

There's nothing wrong with a carbon steel straight blade. In "general", carbon steel edges will be as sharp, or even sharper, than stainless steel edges. In my limited experience, stainless blades just will not oxidize and might keep the edge a little longer than carbon steel. To my knowledge, there are no special coatings on stainless steel straight blades, as there are on stainless DE blades.

Re prep, the suggestion is not glycerin, but rather a bar of glycerin soap. Such as Neutrogena or Musgo. I used to apply preshave oil, but have largely switched to a preshave glycerin soap as preshave prep. Either one, however, is great; don't skimp and use a nice amount of product, massaged well.

My first shave with the Stirling Glastonbury (great scent). I loaded up a new Viking’s Sword in my Slim and went to town. Excellent smooth, close, nick free shave. I finished up with Fine American Blend. Another great scent by Fine Accoutrements!

Great shave the one that you get with this British razor. It is a pity that Gillette does not produce such kind of razors anymore.

Bye!
