Thread: Favourite Gem.

    Default Favourite Gem.

Just had a superb shave with my Gem Junior and a new Blue Star blade.Tried the G Bar,Micromatic and Featherweight, but this little razor out performs all of them. The result was at least on a par with the best results achieved with my Tech's,Rocket's and various other Gillettes loaded with Derby's.My love affair with this shaver is growing at a rapid rate. Now to order some Pella's and enjoy the ride.Cheers Phil.

I haven't tried the TPs, but the Treets are great!

I get good results from the Treet or the Gem blades that I picked up at CVS. My favorite Gem razors are the Featherweight and the G-Bar.

My best Gem shave has been with the 1920s version where the top of the head flips forward. The guard seems to be straighter than the other style. After that it is the Featherweight.

I get really great shaves from The G-Bar as well. So far, it's my favorite.

Tried my Featherweight today with the same type of blade, and the shave wasn't even close to the results I have had with the fat handled Junior.Looking at the head geometry on the "stubby one",I think the closed comb raises the hairs before cutting. The difference is amazing.

G - Bar and "Bullseye" Micromatic give me wonderful BBS shaves.
You might want to try the Gem Premium too!

I have tried both the G and the micromatic with drug store GEM blades. Both were underwhelming but I perceived it was more the blade. I just received a mega order from Ted Pella (supposedly same blade) and loaded it into a brass "1912" model with an open comb. Whether it was the blade or the razor, I don't know but it was worlds better than before

I also note that the drug store blades "rusted" after one use. These do not have the same problem. Now when I will use 200 of them, I have no idea!

The Ted Pella blades are amazing and SHARP! Try out your micromatic and G-Bar again and you'll be very happy

Like Hans says, Pella blades are sharp. Near Feather sharp. I'll add that they're smooth, too. They give a wonderful, comfortable shave.

BTW, the 1912 pattern GEM razor mentioned above is my second favorite of the GEM line. Even though they appear as a medieval torture instrument (which can be off-putting) they are really a gentle shaver. Recommended.

    Hans --

STILL don't have a camera 'cept the Cell Phone job that doesn't work worth a damn with razors.

You can check out eBay photos though. 1912 == GEM Junior.

    HTH.

BTW, the Pellas are quite good, glad we split an order.

    John,

Is the 1912 pattern you speak of also called the Junior?

    Yes.

They shave well, but they're pretty ugly looking razors, huh?

Yep. They look like mutant potato peelers from Mars. Took me a while to get up the nerve to try one, but they shave pretty mild, actually.
