    Default Gillette Blue Razor

Over the weekend I purchased this razor. Haven't seen much information about these razors. The one I found has no loss of the blue paint, comes with the original box, and a pack of blue blades with the cellophane wrapper, however I think the blade pack has been opened. Razor is in excellent + shape.

Wondering why I don't seem to see very many of these for sale here. Are they rare, unloved, or....

    Are these worth anything?

    Bob,

Congratulations! You have yourself a sweet looking blue-tip Superspeed. Actually, that looks like it might be unused. The box looks original and the still-sealed box of blades is definitely rare.

The blue-tips are considered mild shavers. There seems to be a preference for the red-tips, which are more aggressive.

You have a great razor. You'll see plenty of info about them (along with the red and the black tipped ones). If you do a search for blue and Superspeed, you should get plenty of other info.

The Blue Tip is the least aggressive of the 50s-style Super Speeds. I prefer the Red Tip, but there are plenty of guys who use these.

    Thanks Hoos,

This razor has been used. I found a blade in it when I purchased it. Almost like someone bought it, didn't like, and put it back in the box. Interesting that I found a pretty good red tip at another store later on in the day. Would be kinda fun to have a set. Am I correct that there is a blue tip, red tip, and a black tip?

The black tip is from a slightly earlier time (early 50s). For your set, you need blue, red, and plain. According to legend, there is also a Tan Tip. If you find one of those, you will be the next King of England.

So I guess I actually own a set then. I have a red and plain, so the blue was the missing piece. Wish I could find a red in the same condition as the blue. I have been using a red for several months and in fact used it this morning and is one of my favorite razors.

So if there is a tan, where did it fit in the line up from non-aggressive to aggressive?

The Tan Tip is reportedly in the middle, equivalent to the plain.

    Default Reds and Blues

Correct me if I am wrong (as if you guys would hold back) but the Blues often had aluminum handles. I think mine do and they lack the heft of the Reds, Silvers and even the Blacks. There was a great video posted here a while back with three ball players (thinking Whitey Ford and Roy Campanelas {sp}) showing the differnt razors and their appropriate beard types.

In any event, I have found the Blues shine up really nicely. Paint largely intact as opposed to the Reds. Perhaps the paint adheres to the chrome better than the aluminum. I have one but have never tried it....maybe it is time.

Nice but can you shave with it?

Ah yes, the legend of the phantom tan tip.....

    Blue Tip Flare, Light, Mild
    Silver Tip Flare, Medium, Average
Red Tip Flare, Heavy, Semi Aggressive

The is a very nice score on the excellent/fine Blue Tip....Great shaver..

Just Googled tan tip Gillette and that led me back to an old B&B thread. Sounds like I have a better chance to see the Loch Ness monster than to see a tan tip.

"IF" an actual tan tip was produced in similar numbers as the red and blue, it logicaly would surface with the same regularity as the other colors. Since no one can show a single one I find it unlikely that an actual tan tip razor was produced. A possible explanation is that the aggresive red tip came in a plastic case with a red bottom, the sensitive blue tip in a blue bottom, and
the regular, normal razor with an unpainted tip in a case with a tan bottom. This led to the idea of a tan tip razor. Of course I could be wrong, just show me one tan tip superspeed flare tip razor.
