September 9, 1913 - the first deadly crash of a Zeppelin. The German LZ14 crashes in the North Sea. 14 people are killed.
 
One year ago, 12 people were killed in a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. A corporation called USIS performed the investigation that led to the shooter's secret-level security clearance, despite a fairly clear history of psychotic episodes involving guns. USIS also gave the go-ahead to Edward Snowden's hiring.
 
21 September 1558 - the Spanish former king, Charles V, dies. His son, Philip II will be the last Spanish king governing the Netherlands.
