Nubuck conversion to leather

Plenty of people are posting online that you can just apply leather shoe shine to nubuck and it'll magically transform into a smooth leather top suitable for shining (but never back to nubuck).

Is that a real thing?

Nubuck is leather. It's top grain cattle leather that's been sanded or buffed to give it that look. Putting shoe polish on it ruins it, which is why it 'can't go back to nubuck' and putting shoe polish on nubuck doesn't transform it into a different type of leather any more than painting your minivan flat black turns it into a stealth bomber.

Nubuck walking boots (non Goretex) turn into a smooth surface after you waxed them a few times to weatherproof them.

So not a real thing.

It may be a real thing that people are doing, but it's not magically transforming anything other than good nubuck shoes into nubuck shoes ruined with shoe polish.

People do wax nubuck and suede occasionally as mentioned above. Is that maybe what you're thinking of? People also wax nubuck and suede when they're past their prime to bring new life to them.
